Small enough to care, big enough to do the job
Sole owner and director of Fat Solution, Gary Armstrong first his career in the haulage industry as an independent driver that specialised in the creation and selling of bio diesel. The company would create the bio diesel from the cooking oil in local takeaways, once made the bio diesel was then sold to bus, coach and taxi companies.
As the company grew it then required a much larger vehicle to carry a larger volume of bio diesel, this resulted in Gary obtaining his operator’s license and his first 7.5 tonne truck. The newly purchased truck allowed the business to carry four tonnes of cooking oil at a time.
The business continued to expand and eventually transitioned into the haulage industry due to requests made by its customers. As the progression of the Euro legislations demanded cleaner and more complicated engine systems the bio diesel aspect of the business began to dwindle so the company focused on the haulage aspect.
Fat Solutions prides itself on the high calibre of service it provides its clients and implements a ‘small enough to care and big enough to do that job’ mantra. Since its inception ten years ago Gary has personally ensured that his drivers are highly qualified, capable and reliable. His drivers are CPC trained as a standard and often receive refreshers courses from Gary himself, he often takes them on difficult jobs to ensure that they act in accordance with his expectations in a safe and efficient way.
The business provides a high quality and reliable service to its clientele on a daily basis. At present Fat Solutions has the capacity to carry anything and everything that will fit into its trucks, as an active member of the haulage industry it has carried a varied range of commodities from ambient products to high value mechanical machinery. The company is consistently busy with regular work from the links it has established with other members of the Exchange.
Fat Solutions became a member of the Haulage Exchange seven years ago it has grown exponentially via its online system that enables the company to find jobs in the surrounding area of its vehicles whilst they are empty to eliminate dead mileage. Commenting on the Haulage Exchange Gary said, “The Haulage Exchange has being fantastic for us,” Fat Solutions has being nominated for the Company of the Year Award at the Transport Exchange’s annual award show.
The Exchange has provided Fat Solutions with an extensive network of like-minded connections in the haulage industry. Gary has established many great working relationships from the network as well as several friendships.
Fat Solutions currently owns a fleet of two 18 tonne Scania Trucks, one brand new 18 tonne Mercedes truck, a support van and a motorbike. Its fleet is fitted with TomTom tracking devices which paired with the Haulage Exchange’s app creates a great solution to minimising dead mileage and maximise profits. On occasion the company has used highly reliable sub-contractors that Gary met through the Haulage Exchange.
In the last twelve months Fat Solutions has purchased its first brand new Mercedes 18 tonne truck from the profits that it made the previous year. Gary never thought that he would be in the position to buy new vehicles outright, however thanks to the combination of his diligent work ethic, fantastic reputation and support from the Haulage Exchange. The business intends to continue to grow without compromising the high quality of its service.
